Conor – Choices – Comebacks – Cash – Coincidence

Conor - Choices - Comebacks - Cash - Coincidence | Blog post by Joey Oddessa

Conor McGregor. What more can you say. He silenced his critics at UFC 189 by stopping Chad Mendes in the second round after getting out wrestled handily in round one. Short notice or not the Irish kid is legit.
The Ultimate Fighting Championships played it’s hand right, made a difficult choice, took a chance and it turned out to be one of the greatest UFC events in history. And I’ve seen them all. Even Lil Wayne can’t deny, Conor is a ‘Cash Money Hero.
Jose Aldo should be the happiest Brazilian fighter on the planet right now that Conor won. Popping corks in Brazil.
Now if Jose can only get healthy to cash in on Conor’s success with Frankie Edgar sitting in the on deck circle with the same goal in mind.

Comebacks. Four of the fighters on the card won the first round and went on to lose
the bout. The winners were maybe slow starters maybe but they manned up.
Throw some credit to the corners too. Wise old man once told me when I was counting my money
in the 1st Quarter of an NFL game, "a dog that shits fast usually doesn’t shit long." He was spot on there.

How about that Robbie Lawler? My God he has come full circle and then some. I always felt
high on Rory MacDonald. What a ‘Ruthless’ comeback. Career wise and in the bout. "And
still UFC Welterweight Champion." Pay the man. Now Rory may need some time off. I think
he woke up with a circumcised nose in Canada. The other four fighters won unanimously with
Pendred vs Howard the only split decision on the cards. Still wonder if judge Weeks was on a
bathroom break. Both Gunnar and Brown ended their bouts impressively in the first round.

I wouldn’t be just not to mention Invicta 13 in my blog. I watched and enjoyed it. Cristiane Justino or
just "Cyborg." Enough said. It’s in the name. I would have preferred an earlier start time or Friday night but
the more Mixed Martial Arts the better. Quote me. By the end of 2016 women’s MMA is gonna blow up.
Post Olympics and even the women in combat sport that will cross over that didn’t make
the cut for their countries are going to be taking a shot at Mixed Martial Arts.
Don’t be surprised. There is a ton of talent out there hungry for 10% of that Ronda Rousey
kind of money.

The Ultimate Fighter Finale was in a tough spot for an encore on Sunday but it was a
free event on FOX Sports 1 and ended with a sensational highlight reel knockout. If ‘Wonderboy’
Thompson’s kick was considered an on sides kick by NFL standards, Big John McCarthy
recovered Jake Ellenberger’s head. Stephen Thompson vs. Gunnar Nelson sounds appealing
and sells after each one’s performance. Only event compliant. Referee Yves Lavigne. He sure is
consistent at being inconsistent.

Coincidence Urijah Faber and Conor McGregor had a small beef in the hallway leading up
to the announcement of the next season of the Ultimate Fighters coaches? Maybe. But
it’s about money and exposure. Good for them and the fighters that will get an
opportunity not offered otherwise to learn and brand themselves on TV.

The Reebok trunks worked for me. Invicta had more color to it but I’m OK with the
uniforms. I don’t need trunks to tell me who is who in the cage or what to buy.

Next stop Wednesday. San Diego, California. Mir vs Duffee. – Oddessa
