Kelvin Gastelum, Guido Cannetti, Fabricio Werdum and Enrique Briones each departed from Mexico grabbing $50,000 in bonuses for their performances at UFC 180.

Both Gastelum and Werdum earned their awards after performing on the night’s main card by the time of their departure from Mexico. Their awards performing in the main event and co-main event respectfully earned them both victories and bonuses at Mexico City Arena on Saturday night. At the same time the Cannetti and Briones also were accorded their honours in the under-card or as runners ups earning them a UFC 180 bonus.

Werdum was having a demanding assignment to beat the hard-hitting Mark Hunt, who was a late replacement, but fought through it to stop the “Super Samoan” at his own game after appearing to drop the first round on the cards. Hunt was eventually beaten by the strong Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fighter who showed a durable chin and much improved standup; he landed a knee and then thrashed him with heavy punches to the ground in the process of winning the interim UFC heavyweight title at 2:27 mark of the second round.

The PPV main card also witnessed the young Kelvin Gastelum scoring a victory against Jake Ellenberger in the co-headliner. Relatively a UFC new comer his performance was recognized by the MMA community and rewarded with a bonus as he scored a fast victory by submission. Gastelum was the winner of “The Ultimate Fighter 17” and improved to 10-0 as a professional when finished the Nebraskan Ellenberger with a rear-naked choke at 4:46 of the first round.

Meanwhile Briones experienced some early damage from his opponent Canetti being on the receiving end of body kicks from the later in the first round of their bantamweight bout. The bout then swung in Briones favor against the Argentinian when Briones ralied back and floored him with counter-uppercut blows. The second round ended at 1:44 when he caught Cannetti and finished by submission by rear-naked choke.

“For a card that offered little in the big name department it delivered on entertainment. A few favorites went down including the highly touted Denis Bermudez in the co-main event.”

“Canetti and Briones both lived up to expectations in their toss up bout and Kelvin Gastelum showed why he was a reasonably sized favorite against the more experienced but heavily wagered Ellenberger.”

“It was a decent night for most sportsbooks seeing Ellenberger and the sentimental favorite Hunt both go down late. Bermudez and Vera losing broke up most chalk parlays early along with the Perez avenging a previous loss to Quinonez on the undercard.”
