Sportsbooks rooting Oscar De La Hoya to be Conor McGregor’s next opponent
The list of fighters hoping to be the next to square off against UFC champion and boxing hobbyist Conor McGregor got a little longer and a whole lot more famous when retired, 10-time world champion Oscar De La Hoya threw his hat in the ring.
“I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds,” De La Hoya said on the debut edition of Golden Boy Radio. “I’ll come back for that fight. Two rounds. Just one more fight. I’m calling him out.”
Two offshore books reacted by listing odds on a potential boxing match between McGregor and De La Hoya. Bovada installed De La Hoya as the favorite at -140 and made McGregor the underdog at even money. Meanwhile BetDSI pegged McGregor as the short favorite at -125 and priced De La Hoya at +105.
McGregor surprised many boxing experts by going 10 rounds against Floyd Mayweather last August. McGregor opened as big as a +1500 underdog and closed around +600.
“This isn’t a GOAT [greatest of all-time] versus an untrained boxer scenario all over again,” BetDSI spokesperson Jacob Crossman said in a press release. “With proper time to train, we expect McGregor to be quite competitive in the ring, particularly against an aging De La Hoya who doesn’t possess the quickness or power he may need to win.”
De La Hoya hasn’t stepped in the ring since being knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in December 2008. The Golden Boy lost three of his last five boxing matches including by split decision against Mayweather in 2007 and a ninth round knockout at the hands of Bernard Hopkins in 2004.
Despite the 10-year layoff, and McGregor being 15 years his junior, De La Hoya is still the clear favorite in a boxing match between the two fighters according to renowned boxing and MMA oddsmaker Joey Oddessa.
“McGregor doesn’t stand a chance, not even a puncher’s chance,” Oddessa told Covers. “No matter how old Oscar gets, if he ends up being priced at anything below -300, you have to look at him as a short term investment with no downside.”
Money is at the heart of this potential matchup. McGregor pocketed an estimated $30 million from the fight against Mayweather with Floyd’s take rumored to be more than double that figure. The state of Nevada enjoyed a record $65 million handle on the fight which topped the previous high of $50 million bet on the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout in 2015.
“For me, Oscar is realistically the biggest money fight to make for Conor,” Nick Kalikas of MMAOddsBreaker.com told Covers. “It’s definitely a money grab from Oscar, too.”
McGregor’s next fight – be it in the octagon or the boxing ring – will be a massive draw. He was the ninth most searched athlete in the United States in 2016 according to Google Trends and there’s no doubt he’ll rank much higher when Google releases its year-end trends for 2017.
The Irishman has a talent for staying in the news without a future fight of his own to promote. His appearance in the ring at the end of a match at Bellator 187 last weekend is a great example.
“This fight would be another huge mismatch and would line the pockets of everyone involved from the promotors to the fighters to the bookmakers to the guys running the concession stands,” Oddessa said. “De La Hoya is one of the most marketable retired boxers on the planet and McGregor is arguably the most marketable athlete on the planet.”
De La Hoya says he’s been training for months and claims to be faster and stronger than ever. A grain of salt should be taken with all of this. De La Hoya knows a thing or two about promoting and that’s all this could be to get people talking about the new Golden Boy Radio show. He considered making a comeback in 2015 and decided against it.
"I hope it happens and I hope it happens in Las Vegas," Mirage sportsbook manager Jeff Stoneback told Covers. "It’d be a big draw and it’d be great for the city."
