How to recover from a KO when betting MMA | Blog post by Joey Oddessa

Just like some unlucky fighters in the octagon, MMA bettors can get knocked out in a flash if they run into a tough card. Some nights, it seems like every break in the action goes against you, leaving your bankroll bruised and beaten and you scratching your head about the MMA betting odds.

In those situations, you have to pick yourself off the mat and change strategies to help get back on your feet at the sportsbook. Here are four steps MMA bettors can follow to recover from a KO:

Don’t bet big favorites
After taking it on the chin, it can be tempting to just want a win to get you back on track. Some MMA bettors can be tempted into taking a big favorite, laying a huge price for what they think is a sure thing. Well, in the world of combat sports, there’s no such thing. An upset loss will sting even more when you have to put down extra vig just to bet the favorite. And even if the hefty chalk does come through, how much are you really winning when the prices get that high? The best returns come from smaller favorites and shorter underdogs.

Don’t overbet, budget
Chasing your losses will only get you in deeper, and expecting to turn it all around in one night is just dumb. Trying to recoup all your losing bets by wagering a fight card top to bottom is like playing the lottery in hopes of paying your rent. And before you go putting down any wagers, you should really set a budget for yourself depending on how strongly you feel about potential bets.

Sports bettors should be wagering between 1 to 5 percent of their total bankroll on a play, so that means if your bankroll if $1,000, you should only bet between $10 and $50. The fighters you feel have the best chances of coming through should warrant the larger wagers, while others that aren’t as sure should have smaller bets on them.

Narrow and focus
When a fighter trains for an opponent, they don’t prepare for every fighting style. They look at what that foe does best and what their biggest weaknesses are, and focus training on those aspects. Mixed martial arts bettors should take the same approach with a fight cards: narrow down the bouts you want to bet, then focus all your handicapping on those matchups – rather than trying to cover an entire card and spreading analysis thin.
